What is Firefox Sync?

Jun 11, 2011

Firefox Sync is a feature that lets you easily synchronize your Firefox bookmarks, preferences, passwords, browsing history and last opened tabs across multiple devices (computer or mobile). Firefox Sync keeps your data on secured Mozilla servers. Your encrypted data can only be used with a secret phrase (Sync Key). So, it lets you take your Firefox experience with you wherever you go. You can browse the Internet on your PC, turn it off and later continue browsing on your mobile right from where you had left it!

 Firefox Sync

Firefox Sync was first introduced as an add-on (called Weave). But now, starting Firefox 4, Sync comes as a built-in feature. Once you set up Firefox Syc on your personal computer, your Firefox data will be securely stored on Mozilla servers and synchronized from then on. Later when you set Sync on a different computer or on your mobile phone, your data will be synchronized from your personal computer. In this way you can access you open tabs, saved passwords, browsing history and bookmarks from a different device.

Benefits of Firefox Sync:

  • Continuous synchronization of bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords  and open tabs.
  • Continue what you were doing by opening any tab you have left open on any of your Firefox browsers.
  • Get the same results on the Smart Location Bar (Awesome Bar) on each of your Firefox browsers.
  • Log in to all your favorite sites using your saved passwords.
  • Use the same list of bookmarks on all of your Firefox browsers.

How to Set Up Firefox Sync?

  • Go to Firefox top menu and select Options.
  • Open Sync tab and click “Set Up Firefox Sync” button.
  • Press the “Create a New Account” button.
  • Fill up the form by providing email address and password.
  • Confirm by entering the captcha code.
  • Once the Setup Complete! message appears, click Finish button
  • Your account is now ready. You can start using Sync by connecting your devices.

When attempting to install firefox on mobile, I was asked if I want to sync. I do, but…the program then wanted my password. I tried both the password to Firefox and the password to email. No go. I was given the option of resetting my password for, I think, Firefox Sync. That means I have an existing Firefox Sync account. When I tried to reset the password, I was led to believe the password for my email would be reset. I DO NOT want that. Is the Firefox Sync account different from Firefox and is it trying to reset my Firefox Sync account (which I might not have) or is it trying to reset my email account password?

Very well put. I am having the exact same problems. Pass word to what?
After trying all those options I don’t know what pass word goes to what
account, and I have been locked out of the set up routine.
