Skype shares 8 percent of all International Calls
By admin on March 24, 2009 at 7:53 pmMore and more people are using Skype for making international phone calls. According to TeleGeography, a communications research firm, in 2008 about 8% of international calls were made through Skype, the internet-based telephone service. So, only five years after its launch, Skype has emerged as the largest provider of cross-border voice communications in the world.

Skype Call
In 2008 Skype users spent 33 billion minutes in international calls, which is approximately 41% increase than previous year, TeleGeography reports. On the other hand, overall cross-border telephone traffic also grew by 12% to 384 billion minutes. But, due to declining call prices, carriers are not generating lots of revenue. In such scenario, Skype’s increasing popularity is also a good news for some telecoms carriers. Because, Skype’s paid service “Skype Out”, which lets users make calls to standard telephones, generates money for them. In 2008, Skype’s paid-for ‘Skype Out’ service generated 8.4 billion minutes of calls.
