How to turn of Firefox Automatic Updates?

Sep 30, 2011

For security reasons, it is normally recommended that you always use the updated version of your web browser. By default Firefox automatically checks for available updates. But, sometimes you may want to stick to an older version of Firefox. In that case you need to turn of automatic updates in Firefox. Want to stop automatic updating of Firefox web browser? Read on to know how to do it.

Turn of Firefox Automatic updates:

  • At the top of Firefox window go to Tools and select Options.
  • An options window will appear. Go to Advanced panel.
  • Under the Advanced panel there are 4 tabs. Click the Update tab.
  • From Automatically check for updates to: option, uncheck Firefox, Add-ons and Search Engines.
  • Click OK to save and close the Options window.

Turn off Firefox Automatic Updates

That’s it. Now Firefox will never automatically check and install updates. Take a look at the screenshot above for help (yes, I am using an older version!). Don’t worry, you can easily turn automatic updates on by re-selecting Firefox, Add-ons and Search Engines in step 4. Alternatively, you can manually check for updates by selecting Check for Updates… from the Help menu at the top of the Firefox window.

For your own safety and to enjoy a better web browsing experience, I recommend that you use latest version of Firefox. Be it due to slow Internet speed, testing purpose or general annoyance, turn of automatic updates only when you are sure about what you are doing. Also ensure that your security software is up-to-date.
